Causes

 Causes of deafblindness are defined under two categories:

 

Ø       Congenital deafblindness (from birth)

Ø       Acquired deafblindness  (developed after birth)


Congenital deafblindness can stem from:

 

Ø       Pre and post-natal trauma such as asphyxia, prematurity or cerebral palsy

Ø       Maternal alcohol and drug addiction

Ø       Maternal Rubella

Ø       Cytomegalovirus

Ø       Toxoplasmosis

Ø       Usher syndrome

Ø       CHARGE syndrome


Acquired deafblindness can stem from:

 

Ø       Illness such as meningitis

Ø       Infections such as encephalitis

Ø       Brain tumour

Ø       Head injury

Ø       Ageing

Ø       Disease
