Deafblind Recreation Program

2009 Able's Ushers & Deafblind Camp!

It is time to start planning for the Ushers and Deafblind camp! The camp will be held between November 20 – 22 at the Phillip Island Adventure Resort. The Resort has a variety of activities for Deafblind people to enjoy including canoeing, archery, raft making, swimming in the pool and visiting the beach, rock climbing, flying fox, giant swing, bush walking, yoga, tours of the island, nature walks and more!

The camp has become increasingly popular, attracting deafblind participants and volunteers from all over Australia. Last year was the biggest camp ever with close to 100 participants! We are hoping to have even bigger numbers in 2009!

The deafblind camp is open to people with dual sensory loss (deafblindness) and volunteers (Auslan skills preferred). The volunteers will guide, interpret and support deafblind people so they can enjoy a weekend of meeting new people and having new experiences in a safe and supportive environment. Camp costs cover transport from Melbourne city to Phillip Island and back, all food, accommodation and most activities.

The Able Recreation Program runs learning and leisure activities for people experiencing dual sensory loss, also known as deafblindness. Most participants of the program use Auslan sign language to communicate and many rely on touch (tactile sign language) to receive information through sign language.

The Recreation Program activities give this typically isolated group of people the opportunity to get out and about in the community, partake in social activities, meet new people and learn new things. The recreation program offers an annual camp which attracts Deafblind people from around Australia and is always a popular event.

We can thank the group of experienced and dedicated volunteers for the success of the program.

The Recreation Program volunteers guide and interpret for the Deafblind people and most importantly, they provide friendship and support. The Recreation Program is grateful to the ANZ bank for their sponsorship in the 2008 – 2009 financial year.
