true Inclusion

1 March 2017

Our team in Hobart took inclusion to a new level recently when they invited one of their long-time participant to sit in on the interviewing panel for a new Disability Support Worker (DSW).

Aaron is 26-years-old and has been supported by Able Australia through the Lifestyle Choices program for the past six years and was an obvious choice to include as part of the interviewing panel for a new Disability Support Worker.

He was thrilled to take part and more than happy to explain what he was looking for in support staf (ie. someone who makes him laugh and is helpful) to the
candidates.

Aaron was particularly taken with one candidate, Virginia Brown and asked her what she could do to support him. Together, they decided he could teach her bowling as he is now on the state bowling team, while she still needs gutter guards to keep the ball straight.

Naturally, Aaron loved the idea while the rest of the interview panel were impressed with Virginia’s person-centred approach and willingness to work with him to achieve a happy outcome.

Needless to say, Virginia got the job and is now an integral part of the Hobart team.
