2012 Deaf GamesThe XVI Australian Deaf Games where held in Geelong in January with over 800 competitors from Australia, Fiji, Samoa and New Zealand.
The Deaf Games featured many sports such as Tennis, Squash, Golf, Ten Pin Bowling and Swimming. Fiona Goldab (pictured above) from Able Australia’s Deafblind Services Team was an athlete in the tennis competition in both the Singles and Doubles. Fiona did a splendid job and finished up with 3 medals, 2 Silvers and 1 Gold. Well done Fiona and congratulations from everyone at Able Australia. On Tuesday 17 January a group of deafblind clients headed down to Geelong to experience the Games first hand. With the assistance of a number of support & interpreting staff they all got along to various sporting events. The day commenced at Flinders Street Station where Fiona Goldab meet us before travelling to Geelong by bus and cars. On arrival at The Games Hub at Deakin University we were greeted by Carla Anderson. Phil Harper, Chairman of the Deaf Games Committee welcomed the group before we all headed off in various directions. Well done to all the competitors that competed in the Deaf Games and some of these athletes will start to think about the Deaf Olympics in 2013. |
