Able Australia’s range of arts therapy programs are designed to support people living with a disability to find a new way to depict their emotions, explore their creativity and increase their self-esteem.
Visual arts therapy
Our ableart program in particular allows the people we support to express themselves through visual art under the guidance of a qualified art therapist or experienced artist.
Participants in Melbourne’s ableart program have an opportunity to publicly display and even sell their works of art at the annual ableart Exhibition at Federation Square. This much-loved event is a particular highlight for the people we support and a fantastic opportunity to showcase the ability of people with disabilities to the community.
Our community-based music therapy program encourages communication, participation, socialisation and self-expression to enrich the lives of people living with a disability.
Research has shown that music provides a range of therapeutic benefits in the areas of psychological, physiological, social, emotional and cognitive function.
Music therapy can:
- Provide relaxation, enjoyment and/or interest
- Provide individuals with a creative outlet
- Enhance physical, sensory and cognitive skills
- Encourage interaction with others
- Assist with mobility and motor skills
- Build self-esteem and empowerment.
Able Australia’s music therapists are highly skilled musicians, are trained in behavioural sciences and are university accredited in music therapy.
Therapy can be run via group and individual sessions, program consultancy, assessment and evaluation of individual client needs and case management.
